According to the American Institute of Stress, on a scale of 43 life events, divorce is the second leading cause of stress coming in only behind death of a spouse. The stress is the same even if both parties agree that a divorce is in their best interest.
The Mueller Law Firm
At The Mueller Law Firm, we treat all of our clients or prospective clients as though they were members of our own family. We are proud to say we would give the same advice to our own mother that we give to clients.
We believe communication with our clients and education at this difficult time is of utmost importance in helping clients make decisions concerning finances, property division, child custody, spousal and child support. We want to be sure that our clients know the ramifications of any decision and we help them weigh the pros and cons of each potential action.
We approach the process in a collaborative way, including our clients in the day to day decision making of their case. We work to help our clients understand the law and how it applies to the facts of their case believing that if they are empowered with this knowledge, the outcome will be in their best interest. They will live more comfortably with the new family structure since they were intimately involved with the decision making process.
When it comes to division of property, if at all possible, we help our clients come to their own decisions with the opposing party about how the property should be divided. If they cannot come to an agreement, the court will divide the property under New York law of equitable distribution. We help our clients to understand that equitable does not mean equal and explain the many factors the court considers in making an equitable distribution order.
No winners in the divorce process
Unlike some areas of law, there are no winners in the dissolution of a marriage. Our goal is not to defeat the opposing party, but to work with them and their attorney in order to make decisions that both parties can live with in the future.
When children are involved, our goal is to keep in mind what is in their best interest with each decision that needs to be made. Courts encourage parents to work together to establish a parenting plan that works for them and that is in the best interest of the children. We do everything we can to make the process as painless as possible so that our clients feel our compassion, know they are in our competent hands and can move forward with their lives in a positive way.
